Jeffery Kendall, 39, has been sentenced to 50 years to life in prison for the first-degree murder of his ex-girlfriend, Brittany Elizabeth Ligdis, who was shot in front of their 4-year-old son. The crime occurred on February 16, 2024, shortly after Ligdis ended their relationship. During a 911 call, she pleaded for help as Kendall entered the laundry room where she was hiding. Prosecutors described the incident as an execution-style murder, emphasizing the danger posed to the child. Kendall was also convicted of child endangerment for putting his son in a threatening situation. The court barred Kendall from contacting his son until the boy turns 16, reflecting the severity of the crime and its impact on the child.

Why It Matters

This case highlights the tragic consequences of domestic violence, particularly the dangers faced by children in abusive situations. Domestic violence incidents often escalate after a victim attempts to leave, putting them at greater risk, as seen in this case. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, more than 4,000 women are killed each year in the U.S. due to intimate partner violence. The severe sentencing of Kendall serves as a legal acknowledgment of the crime’s gravity and aims to protect the child from further trauma.
