City boosts Christmas decoration budget to $400K after poor feedback

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has increased its Christmas decoration budget to $400,000 for the upcoming financial year following community feedback on last year’s unsatisfactory display. During a council meeting, members voted 6-1 to approve the funding increase and to put the responsibility for Christmas displays out to public tender for the next three years. The council’s report indicated that many of the current decorations are nearing the end of their useful life, necessitating new designs. Deputy Mayor Terrence Winner expressed enthusiasm for innovative ideas to revitalize the festive displays, while Councillor Richard Halse raised concerns that the tender process might favor Perth companies over local businesses. The city plans to issue the tender by next month, with last year’s budget set at $330,000.

Why It Matters

This decision reflects a broader trend in local governance where community input is influencing budget allocations and project planning. The previous year’s Christmas display faced criticism, prompting the council to seek improvements that align with public expectations. With the current decorations aging and requiring increased maintenance, the city aims to ensure that future displays are more appealing and sustainable. This shift towards public tenders could also encourage local businesses to participate in community projects, fostering economic engagement and innovation within the city.
