Cincinnati Bengals release Cody Ford while evaluating swing tackle competition

The Cincinnati Bengals have released offensive lineman Cody Ford as of August 24. Coach Zac Taylor stated that the move was made out of respect for Ford, allowing him to start searching for a new team. Ford, who joined the Bengals in the 2023 offseason, participated in 50 regular-season games with 10 starts over three years, often switching between positions without much preparation. Despite showing up in good shape for training camp, his performance was inconsistent, highlighted by allowing a sack and a false start in a recent preseason game. The Bengals are now evaluating other players, including second-year tackle Jalen Rivers and Javon Foster, for the backup swing tackle position, as they prepare to finalize their roster ahead of the season.

Why It Matters

Cody Ford’s release reflects the competitive nature of NFL roster decisions, especially as teams approach the deadline to trim rosters to 53 players. Ford’s varied role and experience highlight the challenges teams face in balancing versatility with performance reliability. The Bengals previously found success in acquiring veteran linemen after roster cuts, as seen with Dalton Risner, who became a key player for Cincinnati. With the current lack of clarity on the backup offensive line, the team’s decisions in the coming days will be critical for their depth and overall performance in the upcoming season.
