Israel issues demolition notices in refugee camp in Jerusalem

Israeli forces issued demolition notices in the Qalandia refugee camp near Jerusalem on Tuesday evening, following ongoing military operations in the area. The Jerusalem Governorate confirmed the notices without additional details. Earlier that day, Israeli troops conducted raids in both the Kafr Aqab neighborhood and the Qalandia camp, leading to the expulsion of UNRWA personnel from the Qalandia Training Center. Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir announced the intention to remove the UNRWA facility, claiming that the agency has no place in Jerusalem or Israel, following a Knesset decision in October 2024 that restricted UNRWA’s operations within Israel. The military presence in the occupied West Bank has intensified, with increased raids and violence since the escalation of conflict in Gaza in October 2023.

Why It Matters

The situation in the Qalandia refugee camp highlights the ongoing tensions between Israeli authorities and Palestinian communities, particularly in light of recent legislative changes that restrict UNRWA’s presence. The Israeli government’s actions come amid a broader context of military operations in the West Bank, which have escalated since the onset of the conflict in Gaza. The Knesset’s 2024 legislation against UNRWA reflects a significant shift in Israeli policy toward Palestinian refugees, impacting humanitarian efforts and potentially exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region. This environment of increasing military activity and legislative restrictions raises concerns about the future of Palestinian rights and the stability of the area.
