ChatGPT can now track user activity on computers, raising concerns

OpenAI has introduced a new feature called Computer History in ChatGPT, designed to enhance the AI’s understanding of user behavior by tracking mouse clicks and keyboard inputs. Currently available exclusively for select Apple Mac users on the Pro plan, this feature is off by default. It creates a timeline of user activities without taking screenshots or recording audio, enabling the chatbot to assist users more effectively and suggest relevant skills or automations. Users have control over this feature, with the ability to exclude certain apps and delete tracked data, which is stored locally and discarded after 48 hours. However, cybersecurity experts have raised concerns about potential data exposure if malware is present on a user’s device.

Why It Matters

The implementation of Computer History reflects a growing trend in AI development where user interaction data is utilized to improve machine learning applications. As remote work and digital collaboration increase, tools that enhance productivity are in high demand. However, the security risks associated with tracking user activity, especially in terms of unencrypted data, highlight the need for robust cybersecurity measures. Historically, data breaches and misuse of personal information have led to significant privacy concerns, underscoring the importance of user awareness regarding the features they opt into and the potential vulnerabilities involved.
