What You Need to Know
• Doctors in Sri Lanka removed a 3.1kg bladder stone from a 55-year-old man in Trincomalee.
• The bladder stone is believed to be the largest ever documented, comparable in size to an ostrich egg.
• The patient had been hospitalized after a stroke and had difficulty urinating due to the stone.

Doctors in Sri Lanka successfully removed a 3.1kg (6.8lb) bladder stone from a 55-year-old man at a hospital in Trincomalee last week. The patient had been admitted for treatment following a stroke, during which doctors discovered the bladder stones after he reported difficulty urinating. The surgical team, led by Dr. Prahalahan Balakrishnan, indicated that the stone is likely the largest ever recorded, weighing as much as a full-term baby and measuring approximately the size of an ostrich egg. Following the surgery, Dr. Balakrishnan confirmed that the patient is in “very good health” and continues to receive treatment for other medical conditions. The stone is believed to have been present in the patient’s bladder for five to ten years.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights the challenges of diagnosing and treating urinary bladder stones, particularly in patients with other health issues. The removal of such a large stone is significant, as it may set a new medical record and raise awareness about urinary health. Bladder stones can develop over time due to various factors, including diet and hydration levels, making this case a critical reminder of the importance of regular medical check-ups. The successful surgery reflects advancements in medical procedures and the capabilities of healthcare professionals in Sri Lanka.
