A Hong Kong Double Feature Comes to Criterion and Our Pick of the Week

The Heroic Trio / Executioners This is a Johnnie To double feature! Why should you watch it? With Maggie Cheung, Anita Mui, Michelle Yeoh starring, any film featuring even one of these women is worth seeing, but all three together? Twice?! This Hong Kong double feature, unfortunately crammed onto the same UHD and Blu-ray discs, showcases all three talents in two stories of heroes battling evil. To directs with a fantastical eye, unleashing action sequences using wirework, gunplay, and spectacle. The first film feels grounded in reality while the sequel is set in a dystopian future, both delivering high-flying action adventures with powerful women teaming up to take down villains. Criterion's foray into Hong Kong action is a delightful one, with both films receiving slick restorations that make the movies burst with detail and color. (Although it would have been better if they had their own discs, there's really nothing to complain about here.) The Best Afire What is it? A rare drama for adults. Why see it? Christian Petzold creates films for adults, infusing dramas with humanity, relationships, love, and touches of comedy and thrillers. In this film, he explores the connections between friends and strangers, the ease with...

Martin Scorsese gives update on Jesus Christ movie

Martin Scorsese provides an update on his upcoming film about Jesus Christ, stating, "I want to make something unique and different." During the Berlin Film Festival, Martin Scorsese discussed his upcoming project centered around the life of Jesus Christ. Although the Jesus Christ movie could be his next endeavor, Scorsese is still in the process of planning it. He mentioned, "I'm contemplating it right now. What kind of film I'm not quite sure, but I want to make something unique and different that could be thought-provoking and I hope also entertaining. I'm not quite sure yet how to go about it." After completing the awards tour for "Killers of the Flower Moon," Scorsese aims to focus on this project. He expressed, "Maybe I'll get some sleep and then wake up and I'll have this fresh idea of how to do it." While there is still much to be done before moving forward, the film is expected to be based on Shūsaku Endō's book "A Life of Jesus," the same author who wrote the novel for "Silence." Following his film "Silence," Scorsese had an encounter with Pope Francis, which sparked his interest in creating another film about Jesus. The director shared,...

‘No Way Up’ Serves Up Disaster Movie Thrills With Just Enough Bite

Pair it with 2022’s ‘Fall’ for a fun double feature. By Rob Hunter · Published on February 20th, 2024 It’s not easy being a fan of shark attack cinema these days. The subgenre has its classics (Jaws, 1975), its mean-spirited entertainment (Tintorera: Killer Shark, 1977), its big B-movie blasts (Deep Blue Sea, 1999), and its unexpected surprises (Deep Blue Sea 3, 2020), but most entries immediately sink to the bottom. It’s especially bad these days as cheap, ugly CG sharks have become the norm. Too many filmmakers don’t seem to be making the effort to deliver anything fresher than week-old fish, so it’s a joy when something outside of the box comes splashing into view. No Way Up is a disaster/survival thriller with a very specific, and very unexpected threat — sharks on a plane. The early flight from Los Angeles to Cabo is a mostly empty one with only a couple dozen people between the passengers and crew, but it’s about to get a whole lot leaner. An engine explodes after a bird strike, a large hole blows out the side of the plane, and after a brief respite floating atop the ocean, the plane quickly submerges beneath the surface. Some...

Juliette Binoche on Working With Benoît Magimel in “The Taste of Things.”

Some actors come to embody a national cinema through an alchemical combination of demeanor and film choices. You might say that Clint Eastwood is the quintessential American icon, for example, or that Hugh Grant is the embodiment of a certain kind of Britishness. When it comes to France, one of the country’s archetypal stars is Juliette Binoche, whose understated elegance and cryptic smile have graced art-house and popular movies alike since her domestic breakthrough playing an ingénue actress in “Rendez-Vous” (1985), followed by worldwide fame a decade later with the romantic drama “The English Patient” (1996), for which she earned an Academy Award. Now Binoche has two projects arriving at the same time in the United States: Tran Anh Hung’s “The Taste of Things,” in which she plays a self-effacing 19th-century cook, and the Apple TV+ series “The New Look,” in which she portrays Coco Chanel — meaning Binoche essentially carries the flags of food and fashion, the most visible signifiers of French culture abroad.During a recent interview in New York, the actress looked amused when asked about being a national symbol. “I’m fine taking on that role,” she said, laughing. “What’s important is what people feel, because the audience relates to...
