Martin Scorsese provides an update on his upcoming film about Jesus Christ, stating, “I want to make something unique and different.”
During the Berlin Film Festival, Martin Scorsese discussed his upcoming project centered around the life of Jesus Christ.
Although the Jesus Christ movie could be his next endeavor, Scorsese is still in the process of planning it. He mentioned, “I’m contemplating it right now. What kind of film I’m not quite sure, but I want to make something unique and different that could be thought-provoking and I hope also entertaining. I’m not quite sure yet how to go about it.”
After completing the awards tour for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Scorsese aims to focus on this project. He expressed, “Maybe I’ll get some sleep and then wake up and I’ll have this fresh idea of how to do it.” While there is still much to be done before moving forward, the film is expected to be based on Shūsaku Endō’s book “A Life of Jesus,” the same author who wrote the novel for “Silence.”
Following his film “Silence,” Scorsese had an encounter with Pope Francis, which sparked his interest in creating another film about Jesus. The director shared, “That was viewed by the Vatican and so I met the Pope a couple of times based on that and at one point in a meeting he also talked about fresher ways of thinking about Christianity, the essentials of it. I’m always interested in that.”
Scorsese’s previous depiction of Jesus Christ in “The Last Temptation of Christ” faced backlash for its portrayal of Christ grappling with various temptations. With this upcoming film, the director aims to make religion more accessible and remove the negative connotations associated with organized religion. He hopes to encourage people to reconsider their views on religion and its impact on their lives.
