Canada Approves Transfer of Marineland’s Beluga Whales to U.S.

Canada’s last captive whales have avoided euthanasia after Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson conditionally approved their export to the U.S. Marineland, the Niagara Falls park seeking to relocate 30 beluga whales and four dolphins, is in talks with four U.S. aquariums. Thompson emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the animals would be euthanized if permits weren’t granted by January 30. Ontario Premier Doug Ford supported the decision, indicating the animals would have a better living environment in the U.S.
