Police in Broomfield, Colorado, are investigating a series of incidents in which a family’s dogs were poisoned with methamphetamine-laced hot dogs found in their backyard. The events have been occurring since November, with the most recent incident reported on March 22. Jillian Frank recounted how her mother discovered a hot dog containing a crystal substance on their patio, which later tested positive for meth. Following this, two of the family’s dogs, Gable and Murray, exhibited severe symptoms after ingesting the tainted food, leading to veterinary visits and subsequent positive tests for meth and MDMA. The family has not identified any potential suspects or reasons for the targeting of their pets and has since installed security cameras and netting around their property. This troubling situation has prompted the family to consider relocating for safety.

Why It Matters

This case highlights a disturbing trend of animal cruelty where pets are intentionally harmed within their own homes. The use of dangerous substances like methamphetamine not only poses immediate health risks to animals but may also indicate broader community safety issues. Historically, incidents of animal poisoning can lead to heightened fear among pet owners and can strain community relations, as well as overwhelm local law enforcement resources. Such acts of cruelty can reflect underlying social problems, including drug-related crime and the potential for violence in neighborhoods.
