Nigerian Officers to Stand Trial for Alleged Coup Plot

A group of 16 Nigerian officers will face military court for allegedly plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu in 2022, following their arrest for “acts of indiscipline.” Initially dismissing coup rumors, the military has now acknowledged some officers will be tried, emphasizing accountability and adherence to military ethics. This development comes amid a history of military coups in Nigeria and regional instability, with the armed forces reaffirming their commitment to civilian authority and democracy. Operational pressures and resource constraints continue to challenge the military’s discipline and effectiveness.
