Senegal protests fan imprisonment after AFCON 2025 final clashes

Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko expressed regret over the sentencing of 18 Senegalese football fans to prison for hooliganism during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco. The fans were convicted of violence and causing damage after unrest broke out in the stands. Following the court’s decision, which included sentences of three months to one year, the Senegalese football federation called the verdicts “incomprehensibly harsh.” The supporters plan to seek a royal pardon from King Mohammed VI.
