What You Need to Know
• The River Rhine has reached record low water levels in Germany and the Netherlands due to heatwaves.
• At the end of July, 44% of Rhine measuring stations reported extremely low water levels, according to NIWIS.
• The navigable water depth at Kaub near Koblenz fell to 25cm, matching a previous record low from 2018.

The River Rhine, one of Europe’s busiest waterways, has experienced record low water levels in various locations, including Cologne, Germany, and Lobith, Netherlands, due to ongoing heatwaves affecting Europe. Germany’s Low Water Information System (NIWIS) reported that as of late July, 44% of Rhine measuring stations and 78% of Danube stations recorded extremely low levels. The navigable water depth at the critical chokepoint of Kaub near Koblenz fell to 25 centimeters, equaling a record low set in 2018. Martin Wolters, from the Rhine Waterways and Shipping Authority, indicated that while shipping is unlikely to cease entirely, adjustments will be necessary, potentially leading to increased transport costs and supply chain disruptions.

Why It Matters

The declining water levels in the Rhine and other major European rivers, such as the Danube, are significant for transportation, industry, and agriculture. The Rhine serves as a crucial shipping route, and low water levels can severely restrict navigation, impacting economic activities. Historical data shows that drought conditions have worsened in central-western Europe, with the EU’s Drought Observatories noting critical drought levels. This situation is compounded by ongoing heatwaves, which are expected to persist, further stressing water resources across the region.
