How Russia suffered record losses in Ukraine in 2024

In 2023, Russian forces suffered their highest casualties in the Ukraine conflict, with at least 45,287 soldiers killed, nearly triple the losses from the previous year. The deadliest day was February 20, 2024, when 201 soldiers died due to a missile strike during a medal ceremony, including Aldar Bairov, Okhunjon Rustamov, and Igor Babych. Overall, estimates suggest that the true death toll could range between 164,223 and 237,211, as independent analysis indicates only 45% to 65% of fatalities have been accounted for based on open-source data.
