Calgary man Ben Maize is on trial for mischief and break and enter after allegedly tunnelling into his upstairs neighbour Betty Golightly’s apartment between Aug. 5 and Sept. 5, 2025. Golightly testified that upon returning home, she found her apartment locked from the inside with signs of disturbance and holes in the drywall leading to Maize’s unit. Representing himself, Maize argued that renovations in the building could explain the damage and that there was no proof he entered Golightly’s apartment. Justice Eric Tolppanen will deliver a decision in the coming weeks.
