Yukon is experiencing extreme cold, with temperatures around -40 C in Whitehorse, prompting emergency officials to prepare for potential power outages due to significant strain on the power grid. Energy Minister Ted Laking reported a record peak demand of 123 megawatts, while emergency manager Shane Skarnulis advised residents to have a 72-hour emergency kit and a heat retention plan. RCMP also cautioned against unnecessary travel due to increased vehicle incidents. Community warming centres will be activated if rolling blackouts occur.
