Backyard nurseries spreading pest plants in Southland

Environment Southland is warning against backyard nurseries selling pest plants, including cotoneaster, buddleia, pig’s ear, and wilding pine. The council is actively fighting invasive plants like purple loosestrife, parrot’s feather, boxthorn, and German ivy, urging Southlanders to check their ponds and gardens for these species. Regional councils across New Zealand are working to eradicate harmful plants and prevent their spread into nature through education and enforcement measures.
