Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke acknowledged that the stringent criteria for a preventative detention regime for former immigration detainees may result in none being detained, expressing a preference to deport them instead. His comments follow the recent charging of Lominja Friday Yokoju, a member of the NZYQ cohort released after a High Court ruling deemed indefinite detention unconstitutional.

Explain It To Me Like I’m 5: Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said it’s very hard to keep some people who used to be in prison locked up, so he wants to send them back to their home countries instead.
