Writer Kurt Johnstad of Atomic Blonde hopes that Lorraine Broughton’s story will become a trilogy, although he is not involved with the current sequel.
It has been seven years since Atomic Blonde, the action thriller starring Charlize Theron as MI6 spy Lorraine Broughton, was released. With the success of the film, fans are eager for a sequel. However, Kurt Johnstad, the screenwriter, is uncertain about the progress of a follow-up but has always envisioned Lorraine’s story as a trilogy.
“To me, I always said that’s a trilogy,” Johnstad mentioned. “You could tell three of those, and I hope they crack it. If they need some help, they know where to find me.”
In 2018, Charlize Theron confirmed that a sequel was in development, with her production company, Denver & Delilah Productions, leading the project. Johnstad has not been contacted by them, suggesting that they may have engaged another writer or have a draft already.
No matter Johnstad’s involvement in potential sequels, the first movie remains special to him. “It was a fantastic script at a time in my career… It brought me nothing but joy,” Johnstad expressed.
Atomic Blonde 2 is said to be in the works at Netflix, although progress seems slow. Theron mentioned, “We took [ATOMIC BLONDE 2] to them [Netflix]…and we’re in the process of writing it right now.” Theron believes there is a lot of potential in the character of Lorraine Broughton.
