In 2022, Ebo Taylor made his American debut with a successful concert in Los Angeles, attended by Janelle Monáe, who was introduced to his music by producer Nana Kwabena. Impressed by Taylor’s performance, Monáe was moved by his unique vocals and described feeling like she was watching a mystical time traveler with wisdom to share. Inspired by the positive reception, Adrian Younge proposed recording a new album immediately after the shows, embracing Taylor’s raspy voice and aged charm to create a raw and sonically unique sound that pays homage to his highlife roots.
