Iran asserts legal right to control Hormuz amid U.S. blockade

Mohsen Rezaei, a military advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, asserted that managing the Strait of Hormuz is Iran’s “legal right” for national security purposes. He claimed this move would end decades of insecurity in the Persian Gulf. Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran is committed to assuring the international community of its non-nuclear ambitions, while attributing regional instability to Israeli policies aimed at expanding its territory. Pezeshkian emphasized that Iranian negotiators would not compromise the nation’s dignity. In related developments, a proposed agreement with the United States includes returning ship transit through the Strait of Hormuz to pre-war levels within 30 days and lifting a naval blockade, along with the release of some of Iran’s frozen assets. Recently, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps reported that numerous vessels, including oil tankers, successfully navigated the Strait after obtaining security clearance.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil transportation, with a significant percentage of the world’s oil supply passing through it. Iran’s assertion of control over this waterway highlights the ongoing tensions in the region, particularly regarding its nuclear program and relations with Western nations. Historically, the Strait has been a flashpoint for conflict, and any disruption can have immediate effects on global oil prices and maritime security. The proposed agreements reflect broader diplomatic efforts to stabilize relations between Iran and the United States, particularly in light of past sanctions and military confrontations in the region.
