Israeli forces burn mosques and demolish Palestinian home in West Bank

Israeli settlers set fire to mosques in the villages of Jiljilya and Mazra’a al-Nubani, north of Ramallah, on Wednesday, causing significant damage and leaving Hebrew slogans on their walls. Local sources reported that the Jiljilya mosque was particularly affected, with its women’s prayer hall burnt and the exterior walls damaged. This incident follows a recent increase in settler violence in the area, including the theft of livestock. Additionally, Israeli forces demolished a Palestinian home in the Barouq area near Yatta, claiming it was built without a permit in Area C, where construction is heavily restricted for Palestinians. Earlier, Israeli forces conducted raids in Qalqilya, arresting multiple Palestinians and leading to injuries during clashes in other West Bank locations. Since October 8, 2023, the Israeli escalation has resulted in over 1,169 Palestinian deaths and significant injuries and displacements.

Why It Matters

The situation in the West Bank has been exacerbated by ongoing violence from Israeli settlers and military operations, contributing to a humanitarian crisis. The Oslo II agreement designates Area C as under Israeli control, where Palestinians face strict building regulations, making it nearly impossible to obtain construction permits. This has led to widespread demolitions of Palestinian homes and increased tensions in the region. The recent escalation in violence and property destruction reflects broader systemic issues affecting Palestinian communities, including land confiscation and access restrictions, which have persisted for decades.
