Zelensky sends 228 Ukrainian anti-drone specialists to the Middle East

Ukraine has deployed specialized teams to five Middle Eastern countries—United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan—to assist in intercepting drones and enhancing air-defense capabilities. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that 228 Ukrainian specialists are working in the region, focusing on countering Iranian-made Shahed drones while local units handle ballistic missiles. Zelensky stated that discussions are underway for significant agreements related to long-term security cooperation. Ukraine has received requests for assistance from nearly a dozen countries facing drone threats from Iran, which has used these drones against Gulf neighbors. Zelensky emphasized the importance of financial and technological support in exchange for Ukraine’s expertise, mentioning ongoing talks with the U.S. regarding a potential drone cooperation package worth up to $50 billion, which includes innovative drone technologies developed during the ongoing conflict.

Why It Matters

This development underscores Ukraine’s growing role in international defense collaboration, particularly in countering drone warfare. With Iranian drones being used in regional conflicts, Ukraine’s experience in combatting such threats is increasingly sought after by nations facing similar challenges due to its ongoing conflict with Russia, which has utilized drones extensively. The establishment of air-defense strategies in the Gulf states is critical, given their reliance on U.S.-made systems that may be insufficient against the rising drone threat. Additionally, Ukraine’s push for technology and financial support from allies reflects its strategy to strengthen its defense capabilities while contributing to regional security efforts.
