Taliban Prioritize Animal Protection Over Afghan Women’s Rights
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Taliban’s new penal code reintroduces the legal recognition of slavery in Afghanistan and undermines the autonomy of women and minorities, with penalties for animal abuse surpassing those for domestic violence. Women face severe restrictions, including being reduced to “slaves” in their homes, while nearly 85% of Afghans live on less than a dollar a day. Economic stress and limited access to healthcare exacerbate domestic violence, and the lack of women in the workforce threatens public health. As a result, the next generation will likely suffer from a shortage of healthcare professionals due to restrictions on education for girls.
