What You Need to Know
• The academic year in occupied East Jerusalem began on Tuesday with a strike by teachers at private and Christian schools.
• More than 45,000 Palestinian students will be enrolled in the Israeli curriculum, a nearly fourfold increase since six years ago.
• Entry permits for over 70 West Bank teachers have been blocked by Israel, exacerbating staffing shortages in East Jerusalem schools.

The academic year in occupied East Jerusalem commenced on Tuesday, marked by an open-ended strike initiated by teachers at private and Christian schools in response to Israeli interference in the curriculum. This year, all new first and seventh-grade classes at Palestinian-majority municipal schools are mandated to adopt the Israeli curriculum, affecting over 45,000 students, which represents a significant increase in enrollment in this program. The Jerusalem Governorate spokesman, Marouf al-Rifai, condemned this integration as a cultural and educational crime, emphasizing the importance of the Palestinian curriculum in preserving identity and history. Additionally, entry permits for more than 70 teachers from the West Bank have not been renewed, further straining the educational system in East Jerusalem.

Why It Matters

The situation in East Jerusalem reflects ongoing tensions surrounding education and identity amid the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Since the occupation began in 1967, Israel’s policies have increasingly influenced Palestinian education, raising concerns about cultural erasure. The forced implementation of the Israeli curriculum and restrictions on teacher access highlight the challenges faced by Palestinian educational institutions. This strike underscores the broader implications of these policies on the Palestinian community’s ability to maintain its cultural and historical narratives.
