Constructing the Arctic economic and security corridor presents challenges due to warming permafrost, which is affecting infrastructure stability and increasing maintenance costs. The proposed 900-kilometre corridor from Yellowknife to Grays Bay aims to support navy and cargo vessels linked to critical mineral mines. Experts emphasize that sustained maintenance and innovative construction methods are crucial, as thawing permafrost leads to frequent road repairs. Funding for highway maintenance has been allocated, with an increase to $2.5 million annually until 2027 and a $14 million pledge for rehabilitation in 2023.
