At least five African countries are collaborating on a potential world-first joint “debt-for-nature” swap to secure around $2 billion for the preservation of a coral-rich area in the Indian Ocean, as reported by Reuters. Debt-for-nature deals are gaining popularity among poorer nations as a means to fund conservation efforts. While individual countries like Ecuador, Barbados, Belize, Gabon, and Seychelles have engaged in similar swaps previously, this African initiative would mark the first time multiple countries are working together to protect a distinct ecosystem.
