At least 773 people were killed in Goma and surrounding areas amid fighting with Rwanda-backed rebels, who captured the city in a major escalation of a decade-long conflict. The rebels’ advance was slowed by a weakened military that recovered some villages from them, resulting in dire humanitarian crisis in eastern Congo. UN reported 700 killed and 2,800 injured in Goma, with rebels subjecting civilians to forced labor and Congolese forces accused of sexual violence.
