The EU has signed a €10.6 billion deal for the IRIS² constellation of 290 communication satellites, set to provide secure connectivity and high-speed internet to governmental users, private companies, and European citizens by 2030. This Starlink rival, developed by the SpaceRISE consortium, will consist of 264 satellites in low Earth orbit and 18 in medium Earth orbit, offering secure and fast communication without the need for thousands of satellites. The initiative aims to enhance Europe’s strategic autonomy, protect critical infrastructures, and connect remote areas through public-private collaboration, as urged by FCC chair Jessica Rosenworcel to promote competition in the space communications market.
