South Korea plans to rehome nearly 500,000 dogs bred for food and offer subsidies to dog farmers to help them transition before a ban on the practice goes into effect in early 2027. The country recently passed a bill to prohibit the eating and selling of dog meat, reflecting a shift towards animal welfare and a decline in demand for the controversial food. Vice-agriculture minister Park Beom-su announced the government’s efforts to support both the animals and farmers during this significant change.
