Prosecutors say major Hunter Biden source a liar, tied to Russian intelligence. Now what?

Prosecutors announced Tuesday that a former FBI informant, Alexander Smirnov, is being charged with fabricating a bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden, his son Hunter, and a Ukrainian energy company. They also revealed that Smirnov had connections with officials affiliated with Russian intelligence.

Despite the prosecution’s request to keep Smirnov in custody, U.S. Magistrate Judge Daniel Albregts allowed him to be released on electronic GPS monitoring.

The allegations against Smirnov include falsely claiming that executives from Burisma paid Hunter and Joe Biden $5 million each in 2015. Prosecutors stated that Smirnov confessed to having contact with Russian intelligence officials and had plans to meet with one of them during an upcoming trip.

They emphasized that Smirnov’s dissemination of misinformation extends beyond 2020 and could influence U.S. elections. Meanwhile, Republican efforts to investigate the Bidens have been fueled by Smirnov’s claims, prompting a House impeachment inquiry into the president.

House Republicans approve Biden impeachment inquiry

In the U.S. House of Representatives, Republicans used their majority to approve a formal impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden, despite the fact they’ve failed to present any evidence linking him to a crime.

David Weiss, nominated by President Donald Trump in 2018 to be a U.S. attorney, was appointed as special counsel for the Hunter Biden probe. The Smirnov indictment has led to calls from Democrats to end the investigation, while Republicans aim to continue scrutinizing the Bidens based on facts.

Hunter Biden is scheduled to provide a closed-door deposition to a House committee, and James Biden, the president’s brother, is set to do the same on Wednesday. The White House has not yet commented on the matter.

Prosecutors allege that Smirnov, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, falsely reported to the FBI that Burisma executives paid millions to the Bidens in 2015 or 2016. They claim that Smirnov’s bias against Joe Biden led him to fabricate these allegations after having routine business interactions with the company since 2017.

In a court filing, Abbe Lowell, a lawyer representing Hunter Biden, dismissed Smirnov’s claims as baseless and suggested that they have tainted the case. The prosecution’s pursuit of Smirnov’s lies has caused complications in Hunter Biden’s legal proceedings, as they now consider him an untrustworthy source.

President’s son seeks dismissal of tax case

Separately, Hunter Biden is seeking the dismissal of his tax case in California, where he faces charges related to lying about his drug use when purchasing a firearm in 2018. He was also indicted for failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes. Despite these legal challenges, Hunter Biden maintains that his father was not involved in his business dealings.

Hunter Biden says impeachment inquiry into father ‘shameless’

Hunter Biden says there’s no evidence his father, U.S. President Joe Biden, was ‘financially involved’ in his business, and calls the Republican impeachment inquiry ‘beyond the absurd.’

As for Smirnov, he faces charges of making false statements and fabricating records. The charges were filed in Los Angeles, where he resided for 16 years before moving to Las Vegas two years ago.

After leaving the courthouse with his legal team and girlfriend, Smirnov did not speak to the press and concealed his face. He wore a GPS monitor on his ankle and had changed out of his court attire. Defense attorney David Chesnoff expressed readiness to defend Smirnov in court.
