An island appeared and then vanished on B.C. reservoir

A mysterious floating island has been spotted in the Williston Reservoir in northern British Columbia, drawing attention from local residents and B.C. Hydro. The island, measuring approximately 70 by 140 meters, was first highlighted in viral social media posts after being photographed by a boater. B.C. Hydro officials initially expressed skepticism about the island’s existence due to the prevalence of misinformation online, but satellite images dated July 21 confirmed its presence. By August 5, however, the island had vanished from satellite views, though it may have relocated to a sheltered area along the shoreline. B.C. Hydro is monitoring the situation but does not anticipate operational impacts from the island’s appearance or disappearance.

Why It Matters

The Williston Reservoir, created by the W.A.C. Bennett Dam since 1968, is the seventh-largest reservoir globally and plays a crucial role in British Columbia’s hydroelectric power generation. The recent floating island phenomenon can be attributed to high water levels caused by significant winter snowpacks and summer rains, which have not been seen in 14 years. Historical data indicates that floating islands can form when organic materials accumulate on shorelines, leading to the growth of vegetation that eventually breaks free. Such natural occurrences are not unique to British Columbia, as similar floating islands have been observed in various regions worldwide, prompting discussions about their ecological impacts.
