Divers have discovered a shipwreck off the coast of Andros, Greece, dating back approximately 2,400 years, containing around 600 to 650 ancient amphorae. The Greek Ministry of Culture announced the find, which was reported by a private individual, revealing the wreck lies at depths between 128 and 144 feet. The amphorae, which are pointed-bottom ceramic storage jars used in ancient times for transporting goods like wine and olive oil, are encrusted with marine growth and scattered across the seafloor. Archaeologists identified three types of amphorae from the late fifth and early fourth centuries B.C. and also found remnants of a lead anchor and stones potentially used as ballast. This significant discovery enhances understanding of trade and navigation during the Late Classical period.

Why It Matters

The Mediterranean Sea has a rich history of maritime trade, evidenced by numerous shipwrecks and archaeological finds. Amphorae have been crucial for understanding ancient economies, as they were widely utilized for transporting various goods, reflecting trade routes and practices of the time. The study of such shipwrecks can provide insights into the technological advancements in shipbuilding and navigation during the Late Classical period. Previous discoveries, including a 1,300-year-old shipwreck off Croatia with gold jewelry and well-preserved ceramics from a 2,000-year-old wreck near Turkey, highlight the ongoing importance of underwater archaeology in uncovering historical trade practices and cultural exchange in the region.
