• UEFA has filed requests in Manhattan and southern Florida courts for evidence related to Infantino’s financial dealings.
• Infantino’s plan to sell a 20% stake in FIFA’s commercial events for $4.2 billion faced significant backlash and was abandoned.

MONACO — The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is preparing a criminal complaint against FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Swiss courts for potential financial mismanagement regarding his unsuccessful plan to sell future World Cup profits to private investors. On Thursday, UEFA announced it had filed documents in a Manhattan court seeking evidence from Thrive Capital Management, a New York investment fund founded by Joshua Kushner. Additionally, UEFA filed a request in a southern Florida district court for authorization to gather evidence against FIFA, which has offices in Coral Gables, Florida. Infantino’s plan involved Thrive Capital paying $4.2 billion for a 20% stake in a subsidiary responsible for FIFA’s commercial events, including the World Cup. UEFA’s lawyers indicated that they are considering a criminal proceeding against Infantino and possibly other FIFA officials for criminal mismanagement under Swiss law. Infantino abandoned the sell-off plan on August 1 after facing intense backlash from global soccer leaders, including UEFA.

Why It Matters

This situation highlights ongoing tensions between UEFA and FIFA, particularly regarding financial governance and transparency in soccer. The proposed sale of a stake in FIFA’s commercial operations raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest and mismanagement. The involvement of Joshua Kushner and Thrive Capital adds a layer of complexity, given their significant financial interests in the deal. UEFA’s actions reflect a broader scrutiny of FIFA’s leadership and financial practices, which have been under investigation in various capacities in recent years.
