Jewish groups call for Ottawa to ban militia linked to Toronto shootings

U.S. prosecutors allege that a member of the Iraqi militia Kata’ib Hezbollah informed an undercover officer that the group was responsible for recent shootings at a Toronto synagogue and the U.S. consulate. Despite its alleged involvement in these attacks, Kata’ib Hezbollah is not currently listed as a terrorist entity in Canada. A campaign led by the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs and the Canadian Families of Victims of October 7 is advocating for the group, along with Palestine Action Canada and Masar Badil, to be designated as terrorist organizations. The campaign coincides with the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism and seeks to raise awareness of the ongoing threat of terrorism in Canada. Concerns have been raised regarding the rise of hate-motivated attacks and foreign entities influencing violence within the country, as authorities warn of a potential extremist attack on Canada’s Jewish community.

Why It Matters

The designation of groups as terrorist entities has significant legal implications, including the freezing of assets and making it a crime to provide support to these organizations. Historically, Canada has faced challenges in addressing domestic and foreign-based terrorism threats, particularly concerning groups linked to Iran. The rise of politically motivated violence, including anti-Israel demonstrations in Canada that have seen calls for violence against Jewish communities, highlights the increasing complexity of national security issues. A federal threat assessment identified a realistic possibility of extremist violence targeting the Jewish community in Canada, underscoring the urgency of addressing these security concerns.
