Two men from Saskatchewan, Mohammed Masum, 44, and Sohel Haider, 55, have been convicted of human trafficking after exploiting a woman from Bangladesh who worked in their restaurants. The verdict was delivered by Judge Miguel Martinez in Saskatoon provincial court, who noted that the men took advantage of the woman’s vulnerabilities and fears regarding her immigration status. Masum was found guilty of three counts of sexual assault against the woman, which included taking her passport and coercing her into sexual acts. The trial spanned approximately seven weeks over 18 months and covered events from August 2022 to March 2023. Both men were taken into custody following the announcement of the verdict and are awaiting sentencing, which could carry a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Why It Matters

Human trafficking remains a significant issue globally, with Canada being a destination for individuals seeking better opportunities. In 2021, the Canadian government reported 100 cases of human trafficking, highlighting the vulnerabilities faced by temporary foreign workers. The case underscores the need for stronger protections for migrant workers who may be exploited by employers. The convictions also reflect an increasing awareness and legal action against human trafficking, which has long-term implications for policy and law enforcement in Canada and beyond.
