Regina hospitals have not addressed hand-washing issues identified in 2018

Staff at Regina hospitals continue to struggle with hand hygiene compliance, as highlighted in a recent audit by provincial auditor Tara Clemett. Despite recommendations made in 2018, the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) has not fully implemented necessary changes, with a significant number of hospital units failing to meet hand hygiene standards. As of December 2025, 43% of the 60 audited units showed unacceptable compliance rates, with ten units reporting hand hygiene rates below the required 80%. The SHA has mandated that unit managers monitor compliance and create action plans for low-performing units. The audit also pointed to the importance of hand hygiene in preventing hospital-acquired infections, a critical issue given that such infections contribute to thousands of deaths in Canada annually.

Why It Matters

Hand hygiene is essential in healthcare settings to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases. Historical audits, including one from 2018, revealed that compliance rates at Regina hospitals were consistently insufficient, prompting ongoing concerns about patient safety. Hospital-acquired infections, which can lead to extended patient stays and increased morbidity, remain a significant public health issue, with estimates indicating that they claim approximately 8,000 lives in Canada each year. The persistence of poor hand hygiene practices in Regina hospitals underscores the need for effective infection control measures and compliance monitoring to safeguard patient health.
