Experts urge Albertans to use sunscreen amid rising skin cancer rates

As cases of melanoma, a severe form of skin cancer, surge in Alberta, health experts are urging residents to prioritize sun protection and be wary of misleading information on social media. Statistics Canada reports that new melanoma cases in the province nearly doubled from 2013 to 2023, with an increase in the age-standardized rate from 17.6 to 26.3 per 100,000 people. The Canadian Cancer Society projects that 1,190 new cases will be diagnosed in Alberta this year, resulting in approximately 115 deaths. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is responsible for 65% of these cases, and medical professionals emphasize that childhood sunburns significantly elevate the risk of developing melanoma. Dermatologist Dr. Ryan Lewinson recommends using broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and reapplying every two hours. However, a recent Canadian study indicates that many people do not use sunscreen consistently, and misinformation about sunscreen safety is prevalent on platforms like TikTok.

Why It Matters

This rise in melanoma cases is noteworthy as it reflects a broader trend of increasing skin cancer incidences in Canada, particularly among women, where melanoma rates continue to rise. The dangers of UV exposure are well-documented, with studies showing a direct correlation between sunburns and increased melanoma risk. Research indicates that despite growing awareness of these risks, many individuals still neglect proper sun protection practices. The spread of misinformation about sunscreen on social media can further exacerbate this issue, leading to potentially harmful health decisions. Understanding these dynamics is critical in combating the rising rates of melanoma and promoting effective public health strategies.
