Diarrhea-causing parasite infects over 1,000 in the U.S.

A cyclospora outbreak in the United States has sickened over 1,000 individuals and resulted in dozens of hospitalizations. Multiple states reported infections causing symptoms such as watery diarrhea, fever, and nausea, with Michigan alone accounting for approximately 992 cases and 40 hospitalizations. Although cyclospora infections typically occur in spring and summer, this year’s outbreak is notably large, with no deaths reported. Canada has not identified any related outbreaks, and officials state that the parasite is not commonly found in Canadian food or drinking water. The source of the outbreak remains unknown, but it is believed to be linked to produce imported from regions such as South and Central America.

Why It Matters

Cyclospora is a parasite that can lead to gastrointestinal illness and is primarily transmitted through contaminated fresh produce. Historical outbreaks, such as those associated with Guatemalan raspberries in 1997 and Mexican basil in 2019, highlight the ongoing risk of foodborne illnesses from contaminated fruits and vegetables in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes a rising trend in cyclospora cases over the last decade, attributed to factors like climate change and improved detection methods. Understanding the transmission and impact of cyclospora is crucial for public health, particularly as thousands of cases are reported annually in the U.S.
