Astronaut Jeremy Hansen, who participated in the historic Artemis II mission around the moon in April, is retiring from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). The CSA confirmed his retirement in a news release, stating that Hansen will seek new professional opportunities starting September 2026, while continuing his service as a Reservist with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Hansen, who joined the CSA in 2009 and completed astronaut training in 2011, expressed gratitude in a social media post, emphasizing his ongoing commitment to Canada’s space endeavors. After his departure, the CSA will have three active astronauts: David Saint-Jacques, Joshua Kutryk, and Jenni Gibbons. Gibbons played a significant role in the Artemis II mission, while Kutryk is scheduled for a future International Space Station mission.

Why It Matters

Jeremy Hansen’s retirement marks the end of a significant era for the Canadian Space Agency, as he was the first Canadian to participate in a lunar mission. His contributions have not only advanced Canada’s presence in space exploration but have also inspired generations of Canadians to pursue careers in STEM fields. The Artemis II mission, part of NASA’s broader Artemis program, aims to return humans to the moon and establish a sustainable presence there, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in space science. Hansen’s transition reflects the ongoing evolution of roles within the CSA, as Canada continues to play an integral part in global space exploration efforts.
