The Thunder Bay Police Service has reported a second train-related death of a pedestrian in the city within two weeks. The latest incident occurred Friday near the intersection of South Water Street and Pearl Street, where a 34-year-old man was found deceased after being struck by a train. The police’s forensic identification and traffic units are conducting an investigation into the sudden death. The incident involved a Canadian Pacific Kansas City train at the Pearl Street level crossing. In a separate case, another pedestrian was killed in a collision with a train on April 25, near Fort William Road. The police have not released further details about the deceased in that incident.

Why It Matters

Train accidents involving pedestrians are a growing concern in many urban areas, highlighting the importance of rail safety education. The railway industry emphasizes that trains can approach quickly and quietly, requiring vigilance from pedestrians at crossings. The safety guidelines recommend always using marked crossings and avoiding distractions, such as mobile devices, near tracks. Organizations like Operation Lifesaver aim to reduce fatalities and injuries by raising awareness about safe behaviors around railway properties, reflecting an ongoing effort to address the risks associated with pedestrian and train interactions.
