Runway incursions: Increasing incidents and safety concerns

In early September 2022, a near-disaster occurred at Toronto’s Pearson airport involving an Air Canada Airbus jet with 122 passengers and five crew members. As the Airbus was accelerating for takeoff, a Bombardier plane on a test run crossed the hold-short line, despite air traffic controllers issuing urgent stop commands. The Bombardier’s nose extended 35 feet into the runway of the Airbus, which managed to take off just in time, avoiding a collision. Although no injuries were reported, the incident highlighted ongoing concerns about runway incursions—situations where aircraft or vehicles are mistakenly on active runways. Statistics indicate that runway incursions in Canada doubled from 2010 to 2021, with 471 incidents recorded in 2021. Safety experts attribute many incursions to poor communication and the increasing congestion at airports.

Why It Matters

Runway incursions pose a significant risk to aviation safety, with historical precedents underscoring their potential for disaster. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has noted that while high-risk incursions have decreased, low-risk incidents remain prevalent. Communication failures are the primary cause of these incursions, which can result in catastrophic outcomes. The aviation industry has witnessed notable incidents, such as the 1977 Tenerife airport disaster, which resulted in 583 fatalities, emphasizing the importance of effective communication and safety measures in preventing future tragedies.
