Union calls for federal government to stop early retirement program for public servants

The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), the largest union representing federal public servants, has lodged complaints with the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board, urging the government to halt its early retirement incentive program until negotiations with the union occur. PSAC claims the government’s direct outreach to members undermines its role and circumvents established workforce adjustment processes. The program, which targets about 68,000 civil servants over 50, is projected to cost $1.5 billion over five years.
