Lawyer Responds to Alberta’s Supreme Court Oath Appeal
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Alberta government has appealed to the Supreme Court of Canada regarding the constitutionality of a mandatory oath of allegiance to the King for new lawyers, following a December 2025 ruling by the Alberta Court of Appeal that sided with Prabjot Singh Wirring, who argued the oath conflicts with his religious beliefs as an Amritdhari Sikh. Wirring’s legal team contends the oath violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, creating barriers for religious lawyers. Wirring, who became a member of the Saskatchewan bar in 2023, emphasizes the case’s importance for ensuring future inclusivity in the legal profession. The Alberta government is reviewing its oath policies for office-holders amid this ongoing legal battle.
