Last year, amid a surge in demand for AI data centers, Kalina Distributed Power sold its 180-megawatt allocation from the Alberta Electric System Operator for $18 million, highlighting a “gold rush” for electricity connections. This allocation was transferred to Greenlight Electricity Centre Limited, which aims to develop a power facility northeast of Edmonton. The AESO has since allocated its total of 1,200 megawatts to various projects, including one potentially for a Meta AI data center. Experts note that the unprecedented demand for grid connections represents a significant shift from previous energy demands, particularly from the oil and gas sector.
