Iraq’s Ministry of Justice has stated that over 5,000 ISIL-linked detainees have been transferred from Syrian jails to a prison in Iraq, with more than 3,000 of them being Syrian nationals. The US military has been facilitating these transfers at the request of an international coalition to combat ISIL. Discussions are ongoing for repatriating transferred nationals as Iraq seeks financial assistance to manage the intake and handle an uptick in ISIL activity in Syria.
