Salmon Conservation Concerns
Two salmon conservation organizations and an Indigenous water protector express alarm over Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s decision to close biodiversity facilities in the Maritimes, which could jeopardize the endangered Inner Bay of Fundy Atlantic salmon population. The closures of the Atlantic Salmon Live Gene Bank program, critical for raising and releasing juvenile salmon, have raised fears of extinction. Conservationists argue that without these facilities, the salmon population, already critically low, may not recover. They call for continued operation of the gene banks or transfer to Indigenous management to preserve this vital species.
