Calgary Man Released After Appeal Court Overturns Double Murder Conviction

The Alberta Court of Appeal overturned Gerald Benn’s murder convictions, citing serious flaws in the trial judge’s evidence analysis that led to an unreasonable verdict. Benn, serving a life sentence for the shooting of three men in Calgary in August 2020, will be released after more than five years in custody. The appeal highlighted that critical evidence, such as fingerprints and DNA, did not definitively link Benn to the crime scene. The court concluded that reasonable doubt existed regarding Benn’s involvement as the shooter.
