Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Beijing on January 14, 2026, to renew and update expired agreements with China, marking a “new era” in Canada-China relations. In a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People, Carney and Premier Li Qiang oversaw the signing of several memoranda of understanding (MOUs) covering energy, public safety, and trade, including a roadmap for economic cooperation. Despite these advancements, no resolution was reached regarding existing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and Canadian canola. Carney’s trip also included meetings with major Chinese enterprises, setting the stage for future investments and trade discussions.
