A significant washout has closed Highway 16 on Haida Gwaii due to heavy rainfall, affecting a 5.3-kilometre stretch between Lawnhill Road and Miller Road with no detour available. Resident Alex Rinfret reported seeing a “giant gash” in the road, cutting off a crucial north-south route for residents. The Haida Nation warned of extreme flooding and unstable conditions, while plans for a temporary structure are underway. A flood watch is in effect, with Environment Canada predicting up to 110 millimetres of rain for Haida Gwaii.
